Part 1 of 5: MEETING SUMMARY: The third meeting for the Y.G.C.A. and Gay Pride Planning was held on Sunday, May 1st at the Peter White Public Library. Many who R.S.V.P.'d to come did not show up and others called to say they couldn't make it at the last minute, so the meeting had fewer than expected attendees. (Around 10).
This was the perfect segway into our first topic of disscussion: How to get more people involved? We all agreed that telling others about the Y.G.C.A. and Yoopergay.net would be a simple way to start...simply get more active in spreading the word to friends and family and supporters of gay rights. Our goal is to reach 1,000 Facebook "Likes" by Sept. 1st, before the Gay Pride Event on Sept. 18th. Since we are a U.P. regional organization and not just for LGBTs but also straights who support them, this is not unattainable. However we realize that many on Facebook use their real names and cannot or don't feel comfortable in being openly in support, so for the LGBTs only who need anonymity, it is suggested they join Yoopergay.net to remain anonymous and still keep posted on the Y.G.C.A. happenings. For straight supporters who need anonymity, we will also have a special CLOSED TO PUBLIC, private group on Facebook, and also on Yahoo and Google groups..We also decided to expand our internet presence with a blog and a website of our own, and Twitter. We want to reach all people who use a variety of social media. Also we are handing out new business cards for both the Y.G.C.A. and the Yoopergay.net social network. There is talk about doing more community involvment such as adopting a highway, getting involved with other events and organizations.
We also discussed the need for a clear mission statement and we now have our basic by-laws for those who would like to view them. We will have them at each meeting, so just ask to see them or make a copy if you wish to. ...continued on Part 2 below:

Part 2: We also decided to keep the Y.G.C.A. meetings tied together with the Gay Pride Planning Meetings for now because we don't have such a large group yet that needs to be split, so the meetings will be combined for the foreseeable future.
We also discussed dates, time and place for the meetings in the future. We all agreed that Sundays were the days most were available, and that afternoons were the best time of day. We found out however, that the Peter White Library is closed for the season on Sundays, so we need to find an alternative place. So keep posted to find out the new location for our next meeting! I am hoping Joe Heck will see if that offer to meet at the Landmark is still good. But we will look into an alternative as a back up. Check event calendar for more info when it gets decided.
Another good idea we had to get more people involved.... is to all meet in the chatroom on the Yoopergay.net website on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 pm until ? Here we can talk in real time about what is going on, offer suggestions, etc.
Fundraising was a major topic also. We now have a bank account and a Treasurer, so we can now raise funds and have a paper trail. Our biggest idea to raise funds for now, was to participate in Gwinn's Town Yard Sale Event. This is held on the first Sat. of June from 8 am - 3 pm generally. It was decided that anyone who wishes to get rid of stuff can donate items to sell and the sale will be held at Y.G.C.A. director's house on the corner of M-35 and 553. Contact Steven Vidlund for more info or directions, etc. Baked goods or other goods not requiring refridgeration can be sold also at this sale. Anyone who wishes to do any fundraising in their own town can do this also... and just let us know about it and we will advertise it....continued on Part 3 below:

Part 3: Since our organization revolves around community and involvment, we decided to have what we called "Sub Clubs". Or satellite clubs who are under our umbrella, but act independently. We need people from the entire U.P. to feel they are involved and active, so hopefully whatever the Marquette group is doing will be immitated in other towns under the Y.G.C.A. sponsorship. For instance we decided to start a Sub Club called the Sunday Brunch Bunch. This group will meet on Sundays for brunch and then possibly go to the meeting afterwards or have the meeting at the brunch? And we decided to have Fun in the Sun - A day at the beach...We haven't got the details about this yet, but we will post it on an event calendar on all sites. Another idea was to have a Bar Hoppers Club that meets at one of the local taverns. And here is another good one: The Dining Out Club. This is where the members post where they are eating, breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner and asks the group if anyone is interested in joining them at the designated place. And finally, we talked about meeting up at our local casinos on the 7th of every month at 7 pm at the cocktail lounge or near the restrooms if they don't have a bar. These social get-togethers will help keep it fun, but yet we can mix a bit of business with pleasure and exchange ideas and info too!  .....continued on Part 4 below:

Part 4: The Gay Pride Planning mostly consisted of an outline of the event. Opening statement, Introduction, Speakers, Entertainment. We decided that we will not reserved any other areas in the park, but anyone who wishes to can rent the pavillion to serve beer if they want on that day. The Y.G.C.A. will only be involved with the show at the bandshell. This event will start at noon and run until 4 pm. It was suggested that it be a B.Y.O.F. event...Bring Your Own Food...so most of us plan to stop at our favorite fast food place before we go and eat our lunch while we watch the show. There is NO ALCOHOL allowed in the Park except under the pavillion roof ONLY. NO bringing alcohol to the park is allowed. No dogs allowed. An after party or two will probably be planned at a later time by someone. There will be media there and we will have some rally signs to hold for those who wish to. No vendors or booths at this Gay Pride Event because it was decided to keep the attention on the bandshell performances and if the Event grows very large in the future, we will have to move to a bigger venue and then we will have vendors. For now, we will see about passing out flyers, brochures and buttons. T-Shirts will be available, if not at the event, then online for certain...more details to come about that. ......continued on Part 5 below:

Part 5: We are seeking sponsorships and donations of any kind... just ask us for more info about it... and if you want to help... you can check with anyone you think that might be interested in being involved or sponsoring or dontating to the organization or the pride event itself.
And lastly, we talked about needing more board members. This position is a very serious postition, as it is a corporation and all board members are responsible for any liability. We are seeking people from other larger towns in the U.P. such as Houghton, Escanaba and the Soo to name a few, but we also need "representatives" who are not board members, but people who are 'go-to' people in every town! Please let us know if you want to be involved!

Our second meeting was held on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at the Peter White Library on Front St. in Marquette. There were 20 people present at this meeting. We talked about how important it is as a newly forming group to get a strong united foundation or base from which to build on. By the end of the day we accomplished much: We were able to get volunteers to form the Y.G.C.A. Board of Directors. Steven Vidlund will chair the board, Michael Miller will be the treasurer, and Ray Smith is acting as Secretary. In the future we plan to add about 3 more people to this Board of Directors, but for now, this meets the legal requirements to form the corporation needed to get the EIN tax number so we can be a real business with a real business bank account. Mike Miller is an accountant and has managed local businesses so he is highly qualified to be the Treasurer. So the next step is to apply for the 501(c)3 non-profit status. This will take six months to recieve. In the meantime, our legal advisor suggested that we start to collect donations, and use the money to secure the band shell on Presque Isle and other immediate expenses. This will show that we do raise money and we spend it on non-profit things. The money paper-trail is a necessary part of the application and that is why it takes about six months because you need a history.
We also formed a Pride Planning Committee with eight members so far. This committee will vote for who they want as their Chairperson and will report to the Y.G.C.A. organization meetings. They have not yet said when their next meeting will be, but it is expected to be held at the Landmark Inn. Keep posted and watch for an event calendar to R.S.V.P. to this meeting.

Our organization was formed on Facebook on December 28, 2010 and as of March 23, 2011, we now have 310 Facebook 'fans'. We held our first organizational meeting at the Huron Mountain Bakery, 1301 S. Front St. on March 12, 2011. 15 people were in attendance. They came from all over the U.P. such as Sault St. Marie, Escanaba, Houghton, Negaunee, Marquette, Ishpeming, Gwinn and other towns. We talked about forming a 501(3)c organization and looking into grants. We decided to make a gay pride event the centerpiece project to knit the community together through a common activity. The date we chose for the pride picnic and rally is Sept. 18, 2011 and the location is to be at Presque Isle Park. We got on the front page of the Marquette Mining Journal newspaper the following day.
